2020 is the Centennial Anniversary of the Italian Welfare League! This month marks the actual anniversary we were founded. During our 100-year history, the League has gone from helping Italian immigrants on the New York City piers find jobs and housing to its present mission of helping special needs children of Italian descent whom we call “I Nostri Bambini.” Initiated after the tragic circumstances of 9/11, this “I Nostri Bambini” program has raised and distributed more than $2,000,000 to nearly 2,000 recipients.
In times of crisis, the League has always responded to the needs of the Italian community, as it has helped the orphans of World War II, supported relief efforts for Superstorm Sandy and provided funds for those impacted by earthquakes that ravaged Italy. Most recently, with a generous matching grant from the Francesco & Mary Giambelli Foundation, it has responded to the Coronavirus outbreak by providing big-box and grocery store gift cards to families that have lost jobs or c...
The League recently enabled an autistic 8-year-old boy to participate in activities at a Yorktown Heights facility that provides social, therapeutic and recreational services for special needs children.
"To the Italian Welfare League:
Thank you so much for helping us out in our time of need. Your generosity towards my son is overwhelming! I thank you for all the good work you do for our special children. May God bless you all!!"
This autistic 18-year-old from Coram, NY aspires to be a game coding professional. IWL donated funds for a 20-session training program at Game U., which teaches kids with disabilities how to code and design video games.
For our annual "Adopt-a-Child-for-Christmas" program, the IWL spread holiday cheer to a four-year-old boy from New York who lost younger twin siblings in a tragic accident this past summer. The League presented him with gift cards, to Dave and Busters and Chuck E. Cheese, goggles and swim lessons.
IWL Board Christmas dinner 2019. We are grateful for so many blessings this year. We thank all of you, our members and donors who allow us to continue our good work on behalf of “I Nostri Bambini”. From our famiglia to your famiglia, we wish you all a joyous holiday and blessings in the New Year!!
Buon Natale e felice Anno Nuovo!
Marathon runner and mother of two of our grant recipients in 2016, Lisa Tuozzolo, was interviewed while running the NY Marathon and featured in the NY Post. The IWL gave gift cards to this family after NYPD Sergeant Paul Tuozzolo was killed in the line of duty.
On November 6, 2019 at the Women's Overseas Service League Flagstaff and Grove in Central Park, a tribute ceremony was held to the women who have served America, co-sponsored by the East Side WWI Centennial Commemoration, American Red Cross, and NYC Department of Veterans' Services. Speaker Marion Pardo, President of the Columbus Citizens Foundation acknowledged Joan Prezioso, President of the Italian Welfare League. The IWL began 100 years ago while assisting and re-assimilating those Italian American men who fought for Italy during WWI and were returning home to the New York City piers.

I don't know if I can find the words to thank you. Jonathan is a very special boy. He is funny, quick-witted, sassy, loving and smart. Unlike many kids though, he has to work so hard for EVERYTHING! He can act out and get frustrated when he isn't understood.
He loves words and getting his point across. He will find a way to be understood. Thank you for helping him get more PROMPT sessions. He is speaking now because of this. We really appreciate all of your help and support. Love, David, Colleen, Andrew & Jonathan."
